Service 03 — Whole-home thinking

Ventilation and home heating, designed together.

Canterbury winters punish damp, still air. We design the moisture path and the heating as one system, so warmth actually holds.

Heating a damp house is pouring warmth into a sieve.

Streaming windows, musty wardrobes, and bedrooms that never feel warm no matter how high the heater goes — these are ventilation problems wearing a heating disguise. A heat pump on its own can only warm the air that is already there; if that air is damp and still, much of the warmth goes straight into evaporating moisture instead of into you. That is why we look at the ventilation path on every heating job, and design the two together wherever the house needs it.

The visit starts with the moisture story: where condensation lands on cold mornings, which rooms never get sun, how the bathroom and kitchen steam moves through the house, and whether the roof space and subfloor can breathe. Wall vents, ceiling fans, passive airflow paths, and the way doors and hallways move air all count — often the cheapest wins are simply letting the house exhale in the right places. Where active ventilation earns its keep, we talk through the options honestly, sized to the floor plan rather than sold by the box.

Then comes the heating design itself: which rooms need direct heat, which can borrow it through open living and good airflow, and what capacity each space genuinely calls for on a frosty morning. Heat pumps sized for the coldest week rather than the average one, positioned so warm air reaches where people actually sit and sleep. The ventilation keeps the air fresh and dry; the heating keeps it warm; each one makes the other cheaper to run. That pairing is the whole philosophy — warmth that holds, in a house that breathes.

Older Christchurch villas and bungalows benefit most, with their high ceilings, timber floors, and decades of layered draught-stopping, but new builds get the same treatment: airtight construction needs deliberate ventilation more than ever, and getting the design in before linings go up saves real money. Tell Mitch on 027 629 0052 or mitch@hikoheating.co.nz which rooms run damp and which run cold, and we will come and look at the whole picture — not just the heater.
